Gov. Moore Proposes Change to Maryland Estate Tax Law

On January 15, 2025, Governor Wes Moore released the Moore-Miller administration’s FY 2026 budget proposal. Under current law, Maryland has both an inheritance tax and an estate tax. The proposal eliminates the inheritance tax and offsets the revenue loss by lowering the Maryland estate tax exemption from $5,000,000 to $2,000,000. The plan requires approval by state lawmakers.

We will provide an update regarding any changes in the current law. In the meantime, if you have any questions regarding your estate plan and the proposed changes to the law, contact Esther Streete at 410-266-9909.
